"I want to visit the National Hitachi Seaside Park with my pet, but where should I stay?"

Hitachi Seaside Park, famous for its nemophila and kochia, is a popular spot for dog lovers, as pets are allowed in the park with a leash. However, there aren't many pet-friendly accommodations in the surrounding area. The rules can vary, with some places allowing only "one small dog" or requiring that pets stay in the room during meals, making it a bit challenging for dog owners to choose the right place to stay.

In this article, we will introduce a selection of accommodations where you can stay with your pets, categorized by purpose. Whether you're looking for places that welcome large dogs, allow multiple pets, or even let you sleep together in bed, you'll find the perfect spot for you and your beloved dog!

First, let's get a sense of the location by looking at the map.

The accommodations around Hitachi Seaside Park are divided into five main areas. The most important factor when choosing a place to stay is whether it's located on the north or south side of the Nakagawa River. Understanding this layout will help you make a smart choice and avoid traffic congestion.

ひたち海浜公園周辺宿泊エリアMAP

Ajigaura Area (Hitachinaka City)

To the park: About a 5-minute drive | Traffic risk: None | Main facility: CocoHawaii

This area is the closest to Hitachi Seaside Park. Since you won't have to cross the Nakagawa River, you can avoid traffic even during the nemophila and kochia seasons. If you're looking to secure the very first spot in the morning, this is the place to be. Additionally, with a beach nearby, you can enjoy seaside activities during the summer!

Hiraiso Area (Hitachinaka City)

To the park: About 12 minutes by car | Traffic risk: None | Main facility: CocoHawaii

A quiet area along the coast. There are not many pet-friendly accommodations, but you can find some hidden gem inns and pensions scattered around. Hiraiso Beach is surrounded by breakwaters, making the waves very gentle, so families can enjoy their time there with peace of mind.

Nakaminato Area (Hitachinaka City)

To the park: About 20 minutes by car | Traffic congestion risk: None | Main facility: Tabi Minato

The port town area of Nakaminato is home to the Nakaminato Fish Market. Here, you can enjoy a "local style" stay by sourcing fresh seafood and cooking for yourself. Since this area is located on the north side of the Nakagawa River, you can easily avoid traffic. You'll find primarily traditional houses and guesthouse-style accommodations, making it an attractive option for a budget-friendly stay.

Katsuta Station Area (Hitachinaka City)

To the park: About 10 to 12 minutes by car | Traffic congestion risk: None | Notable facility: Hotel Crystal Palace

The city center area is easily accessible from JR Katsuta Station and the Joban Expressway IC. It mainly features business hotels, which offer limited pet-friendly options, but you can stay here at reasonable prices. This area is perfect for those who prefer traveling by train or want to enjoy sightseeing beyond the parks. There is no risk of traffic congestion, but the resort vibe is a bit lacking.

Oarai Area (Oarai Town, Higashi Ibaraki District)

To the park: About 25 minutes by car | Traffic congestion risk: Yes | Notable facilities: Doggy's Coast, Granmare, Sugar Beach

This area offers the most comprehensive selection of pet-friendly accommodations. From luxury resorts that prioritize your beloved dogs to glamping options suitable for large dogs and multiple pets, there are plenty of choices available. It's also conveniently located near Aqua World Oarai Aquarium and Oarai Sun Beach, providing a variety of attractions beyond just parks. However, please note that you'll need to cross the Kaimon Bridge, so it's essential to set off early during peak seasons to avoid traffic.

Which area should you choose in the end?

We recommend choosing based on your purpose, as follows.

  • "Priority for the first entry in the morning" → Ajigaura and Hiraiso Area
  • "Prioritize the richness of facilities" → Oarai Area (Be prepared for an early morning departure)
  • "Budget" as a top priority → Nakaminato and Katsuta Station area

Three Points to Consider Before Choosing Your Accommodation

"Those who conquer the 'Kaimon Bridge Traffic' will conquer the Nemophila and Kochia."

The most important thing to be aware of around Hitachi Seaside Park is the traffic congestion at "Kaimon Bridge." Hitachinaka City, where the park is located, is separated from Oarai Town, where many accommodations are concentrated, by the Nakagawa River, and this bridge is the only connection point. On weekends during the peak season for nemophila and kochia, traffic jams of over 30 minutes can occur in front of the bridge starting as early as 8 AM.

In other words, if you stay at a hotel on the Oarai side and want to aim for the first entrance to the park, you need to be prepared to leave by around 6 AM. On the other hand, if you stay at a hotel on the Hitachinaka side, you can head straight to the park without crossing a bridge, making it much easier to catch the early opening.

2. "Pet-friendly" and "Dog-first" are two different things.

When it comes to pet-friendly accommodations, there can be a significant difference in the level of service provided. Some places may require your pet to wear a diaper and stay in a cage, while others may allow you to sleep together in bed and even dine with your pet in the restaurant. Depending on how you wish to spend time with your beloved dog, the right accommodation for you will vary.

3. Options for large dogs and multiple pet ownership are limited.

Many facilities have restrictions such as "up to 2 small dogs" or "up to medium-sized dogs." If you have a Golden Retriever, Bernese Mountain Dog, or more than three pets, it is essential to check in advance which facilities can accommodate you.
