Hiraiso White Chalk Layer: Fossils Await You!

The “Hiraiso Cretaceous Formation,” which stretches along the coast of Hitachinaka City, is a geological formation dating back to the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era, approximately 75 million years ago. Designated as a Prefectural Natural Monument by Ibaraki Prefecture, it is a site of great academic value, known for its distinctive washboard-like landscape and as a location where fossils of ammonites, such as Didymoceras, have been discovered.
