Why Relying on Your Car Navigation System Can Lead to Traffic Jams
Nakaminato Osakana Ichiba is located along National Route 245 (Oarai Kaido), and car navigation systems almost without exception direct you via R245. However, on weekends and during peak seasons, R245 becomes severely congested from the area around Gusto and Yamaya all the way to the market entrance.With vehicles turning left and right mingling with pedestrians, it’s not uncommon for it to take over 60 minutes just to reach the parking lot.
In this article, we’ll explain how to avoid traffic and enjoy the Fish Market, focusing on the detour routes and parking information published by the Hitachinaka City Tourism Promotion Division. We’ll also introduce access via the Minato Line—a train that’s completely free of traffic.

Detour Route Directions (Hitachinaka IC → Temporary Parking Lot)
There are two detour routes officially recommended by Hitachinaka City. Both start at Hitachinaka IC and bypass the congested section of Route 245, leading directly to the temporary free parking lot.
Common Section: Turn left at the Hitachinaka IC exit intersection → Turn right at the Butano intersection → Turn right at the Jusan-bugyo intersection → Continue straight until the Shiawase Plaza intersection. The routes split here.
Route A: Route via the railroad crossing
Go straight at the Shiawase Plaza intersection → Go straight through the traffic light → Cross the railroad crossing and go straight through the first traffic light → Turn diagonally left at the next traffic light → Arrive at the Nakaminato Free Temporary Fishing Port Parking Lot. The route is relatively easy to follow and is recommended for first-time visitors.
Route B: Route via the Coastline
Turn left at the Shiawase Plaza intersection → Turn right at the end of the road → Turn left when you see the “Ibaraki Regional Coast Guard” sign → Turn right at the first intersection → You’ll arrive at Nakaminato Free Temporary Fishing Port Parking Lot. Since this route follows the coastline, it’s a good alternative when Route A is congested.

Parking Guide
There are paid parking lots and temporary free parking lots around the Fish Market. During peak seasons, paid parking lots fill up early, so please consider using the temporary parking lots or the akippa app.
Paid Parking Lots (No. 1 and No. 2)
These are the parking lots closest to the market, with two locations: Lot 1 and Lot 2. Fees are 100 yen for standard cars (up to 4 hours), 210 yen for shared-ride vehicles, and 340 yen for large vehicles. Space is limited, and these lots often fill up around 11:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays, so we recommend arriving early.
Nakaminato Fishing Port Free Temporary Parking Lot (200 spaces)
This is a temporary parking lot located within the premises of the Regional Wholesale Market. It can accommodate approximately 200 vehicles and is about a 3-minute walk from the Fish Market. Parking is free.
However, it is not open at all times. It is open only on Sundays, holidays, and during busy periods such as Golden Week and the year-end and New Year holidays. The gates open at 10:00 AM and close at 3:00 PM. Please be sure to move your car by 3:00 PM. Since opening dates are subject to sudden changes, please check the Hitachinaka City website for the latest information.
akippa (Reserved Parking)
If you want to ensure you have a parking spot, we recommend making a reservation in advance through akippa. There are several parking lots available for reservation near Nakaminato Osakana Ichiba. We strongly recommend booking early for Golden Week and the year-end and New Year holidays.

During Golden Week, tourists visiting Nemophila stop by the Fish Market on their way back from the Seaside Park, so it gets even more crowded than on a typical weekend. The same applies during the fall Kochia season (especially from mid- to late October when the autumn foliage is at its peak); surrounding roads get congested in the afternoon as traffic from the Seaside Park merges with local traffic.If you view Kochia first thing in the morning and then head to the market after noon, you can avoid the peak crowds at both locations. Access by Train (Completely Avoid Traffic)
If you want to avoid traffic completely, the best option is to use the Hitachinaka Kaihin Railway Minato Line. You won’t have to search for parking, so you can enjoy the market stress-free.
Access via the Minato Line
Transfer to the Hitachinaka Kaihin Railway Minato Line at Katsuta Station on the JR Joban Line, and get off at Nakaminato Station. The ride from Katsuta Station to Nakaminato Station takes about 14 minutes.It’s about a 10-minute walk from Nakaminato Station to the Fish Market. You can enjoy the scenery of this port town as you stroll along at a leisurely pace.
IC cards such as Suica and PASMO cannot be used on the Minato Line. Please have cash or a pre-purchased ticket (such as a Jordan Mobile Ticket) ready.
Nemophila Season “While You’re Here” Plan
During the Nemophila season (April–May), get off at Nakaminato Station on the Minato Line, enjoy a seafood lunch at the Fish Market → return to Nakaminato Station and head to Ajigaura Station → take the Nemophila shuttle bus (free) to the Kaihin Park Kaihin Entrance. This route is efficient and completely traffic-free.Using the Minato Line 1-Day Pass, which includes park admission, is a great way to enjoy a full day at a great value.

Afternoon Itinerary (1:30 PM or Later)
This itinerary involves arriving after 1:30 PM to avoid the lunch rush. Parking spaces start to open up, making it easier to find a spot. However, since some menu items may be sold out, we recommend heading to Kuraku (open until 7:30 PM) or Kobune (open until 6:30 PM), which stay open later.
Nemophila During peak season, the best order is “Fish Market first thing in the morning → Hitachi Seaside Park in the afternoon.” Doing it the other way around leads to the worst-case scenario: getting stuck in traffic at the Seaside Park parking lot and then getting caught up in the crowds at the Fish Market.
