I’m sure many of you are familiar with Aqua World Ibaraki Prefecture Oarai Aquarium.
But did you know about “NIGHT AQUAWORLD,” which takes place every Saturday from 5:45 PM to 8:00 PM?
In this article, I’ll introduce the “NIGHT AQUAWORLD” event, which was revamped on March 14, 2026.
What is NIGHT AQUAWORLD? Oarai Aquarium’s Night-Only Event
Since December 2020, Aqua World Ibaraki Prefecture Oarai Aquarium has been hosting “NIGHT AQUAWORLD,” an evening aquarium experience designed to create a new kind of nighttime charm.
NIGHT AQUAWORLD was revamped on March 14, 2026, and now offers a nighttime aquarium experience where visitors can follow a single narrative—from the exhibits inside the facility to the Ocean Night Live show—based on the concepts of “Tidal Current,” “Intertwining,” and “Encounter.”

To bring the concept of “Tidal Boundary” to life, the lighting design evokes warm and cold currents, creating the sensation of walking through a tidal boundary and offering a fantastical atmosphere unique to the nighttime.
Additionally, the aquarium provides explanations of the ecology of nocturnal creatures and allows visitors to observe them in their natural nighttime state under subdued lighting, deepening their understanding of these creatures.
The Appeal of NIGHT AQUAWORLD | Two Must-See Highlights
So, what exactly makes NIGHT AQUAWORLD so appealing?
I actually went to NIGHT AQUAWORLD, so I’ll share my impressions and what makes it so special.
Here, I’ll highlight two must-see attractions.
The “Sea of Encounters” Giant Tank: “Harmony of Sea Life”
First, one of the highlights you absolutely can’t miss when visiting NIGHT AQUAWORLD is the new presentation, “Harmony of Sea Life,” in the “Sea of Encounters” zone’s “Sea of Encounters Grand Aquarium.”
“Harmony of Sea Life” is a nighttime-exclusive show themed around “tidal currents,” which uses soothing music and lighting to create a fantastical atmosphere throughout the entire tank.
The colors of the tank shifted between blue and orange in time with the music, creating a truly magical atmosphere. The floor was also illuminated with lighting inspired by ocean currents, making you feel as if you’ve stepped right into the ocean.

Since the “Sea of Encounters” Grand Aquarium can be viewed from both the second and third floors, you can enjoy it in different ways: choose the second floor if you want a close-up view of the tank, or the third floor if you want to see the entire tank. Please find the way that suits you best and enjoy the experience.
The show runs three times a night—at 6:00 PM, 6:40 PM, and 7:20 PM. Each session is short, lasting about 5 minutes, so it’s easy to fit into your schedule. Be sure to check out this nighttime-only aquarium light show.
New Ocean Night Live: “FLOW A LIFE—The Pulse of the Ocean”—
And the second must-see attraction is the new Ocean Night Live show, “FLOW A LIFE—The Pulsing Sea of Life,” held at the Ocean Theater in the “Sea of Surprises” zone.
“FLOW A LIFE—The Ocean of Pulsating Life” is a fantastical, nighttime-exclusive performance set against the backdrop of the night ocean, featuring sea lions and dolphins, with visuals, sound, and lighting seamlessly integrated.
The revamped Ocean Live now features the new addition of projection mapping.
You can enjoy watching the sea transform from night to morning alongside the performances of dolphins and sea lions!
There is only one performance at 7:30 PM, lasting approximately 15 minutes, and you can enter the Ocean Theater 20 minutes before the show starts. (Doors open at 7:10 PM)
It gets very crowded, and lines form even before the doors open, so if you have specific seating preferences—such as “I want to sit up front!” or “I want a front-row seat!”—we recommend heading to the Ocean Theater well in advance.
NIGHT AQUAWORLD Exclusive Food Menu | 3rd Floor Café “Mermaid”
The “Mermaid,” a relaxing café located on the 3rd floor, offers a food menu exclusive to NIGHT AQUAWORLD.
While draft beer and non-alcoholic beer are available during the day, the cocktails, mocktails, and food menu are exclusive to NIGHT AQUAWORLD.
This time, I ordered the Ocean Mocktail!
Made with blue syrup reminiscent of the “Blue Hawaii” shaved ice flavor and pineapple juice, it had a refreshing taste that really hit the spot after a long day of walking.
Plus, it looks so stylish that it makes for a great photo.
You can bring it into the Ocean Night Live show, so be sure to enjoy it while watching the performance!
Please note that the food court is not open during NIGHT AQUAWORLD.

If you’re visiting in the fall (mid-September to late October), we recommend a one-day itinerary that includes Kochia at Hitachi Seaside Park during the day and NIGHT AQUAWORLD after sunset.Being able to enjoy the spectacular view of the hills turning crimson and the aquarium at night on the same day is something unique to the Hitachinaka and Oarai areas during this season.
